The Bishopston Society is very concerned about the weakness of Permitted Development (PD) legislation and its interpretation by planning officers on the ground.
PD for roof extensions clearly states that only dormers on the rear elevation are covered by PD and hence full planning permission is required for dormer extensions on front facing roofs onto the street . PD legislation fails to address what applies in the case of roofs which gable onto the street. We consider that it is implicit that any extensions which are clearly visible from the street do require planning permission. Unsightly roof dormers are becoming a major problem in traditional urban areas as they are disfiguring not only the individual property but the street scene and local amenity at large.
